Defending Kaine
The Daily Press recently featured a letter from Brian pointing out the absurdity of Morgan Griffith’s attack’s on Gov. Kaine in a May 22 article.
I was disappointed to read Del. Morgan Griffith’s article attacking Gov. Tim Kaine (“Governors and their promises,” May 22). Griffith, the House Republican leader, didn’t propose any solution to the traffic problem that makes it hard for families to get home and businesses to function. He did not come up with any new ideas to give people relief from rising property taxes and help them stay afloat in these tough economic times. The House Republican leadership continues to tell people that government is the problem – then they seek to make their claim come true.
Kaine has lived up to his promise. He has led in a fiscally responsible way – reducing government waste, providing the services we need and cutting taxes in a fiscally responsible manner. He offered a proposal to reduce property taxes on stretched homeowners by up to 20 percent – Republicans blocked the proposal. When he has offered a solution for our transportation crisis, Republican leadership – Griffith chief among them – had nothing to offer but knee-jerk partisan opposition.
We work best when we work together. As we grapple with the congestion crisis facing Virginia, traffic in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, and unsafe roads and bridges across the state, we need real solutions. Kaine has put a solution on the table –– he should be commended. Griffith seems to be more interested in the same Washington-style politics where you tell everyone who’s to blame and divert attention from your own failures.
The voters of Virginia are too smart for that.
